1. THE DEFINITION OF LITERATURE

The word "literature" has different meanings depending on who is using it. It could be applied broadly to mean any symbolic record, encompassing everything from images and sculptures to letters. In a more narrow sense the term could mean only text composed of letters, or other examples of symbolic written language (Egyptian hieroglyphs, for example). An even more narrow interpretation is that text have a physical form, such as on paper or some other portable form, to the exclusion of inscriptions or digital media. The Muslim scholar and philosopher Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (702-765 AD) defined Literature as follows: "Literature is the garment which one puts on what he says or writes so that it may appear more attractive."[2] Panghilito Luigi added that literature is a slice of life that has been given direction and meaning, an artistic interpretation of the world according to the percipient's point of views.. Frequently, the texts that make up literature crossed over these boundaries. Russian Formalist Roman Jakobson defines literature as "organized violence committed on ordinary speech", highlighting literature's deviation from the day-to-day and conversational structure of words. Illustrated stories, hypertexts, cave paintings and inscribed monuments have all at one time or another pushed the boundaries of "literature."

2. THE DISTINCTION OF LITERATURE

People may perceive a difference between "literature" and some popular forms of written work. The terms "literary fiction" and "literary merit" often serve to distinguish between individual works. For example, almost all literate people perceive the works of Charles Dickens as "literature," whereas some critics[citation needed] look down on the works of Jeffrey Archer as unworthy of inclusion under the general heading of "English literature." Critics may exclude works from the classification "literature," for example, on the grounds of a poor standard of grammar and syntax, of an unbelievable or disjointed story-line, or of inconsistent or unconvincing characters. Genre fiction (for example: romance, crime, or science fiction) may also become excluded from consideration as "literature.”

Based on the definition above, we can conclude that literature is literary work (fictions, non-fictions, plays, etc) from an author which has given a contribution, such as an advice, to the world.

2. What is the distinction of literature?

An Old English language also called Anglo-Saxon, was the earliest form of English. The Old English literature includes poem (e.g. Beowulf) and prose (e.g. Laws). However, the English which was used from about 1100 to about 1500 is called Middle English. As we should expect, the language had changed a great deal in the 7000 years since the time Beowulf and it is much easier to read Chaucer than to read anything written in Old English. In Middle English language prose is religious. Meanwhile, the writers of these early plays are unknown until we come to the beginning of the sixteenth century. In addition, we know that in Elizabethan era has a great poetry, prose and drama and it is same in John Milton era. But, in Restoration literature, there was not poetry. It was almost as great as the change in government. Then, English poets grows in 1660-1798, 19^th century until later 19^th century. So, all in all, we realize that English literature give us a lot of news about the previous literature.

1.There are some relationship between English literature from one period to another, one of them is the language. "The Old and Middle English evolved with their influences from the languages of the ruling powers. Manuscripts provide evidence of the changes in orthography and hints at the changing pronunciation as the seat of power passed from the Germanic Anglo-Saxon to the French Norman. As a result, there was a constantly changing relationship from the phonemically characterized spelling of the Old English to one whose spelling may not reflect the pronunciation in the Middle English. Tight relationship amongst era

1. The relationship between one period to the other period is too tight. for instance, every new writers either poet, prose or drama etc, will take a great deal of learning from the writers and authors in previous period. A simple describing is that the greatest poet (Beowulf, an epic) with unknown author in old english use the old language and the form of that poet is not well-form. But the reader can take a great lesson from it. In the medievel english period the poets try to do better which base their creativities on message form of old english. They write "epic" better. Period by period many writers appears by well understanding about the situation period but they don't forget to make a message to the readers by their writings. For example, in elizhabethan period the women may go to school but they are still bonded by regulations and at time.2. Of course. It will influence new theories which come later because the new theories will base their ideas, opinions on critism theory. They will create theories carefully.

The relationship between English literature from one era and others is intertwining. For example, we can see in Romeo and Juliet’s drama in Elizabethan era that it is still exists until now.
Yes, they will. They will involve because the last authors learnt the previous theory. After that, they will make their own theory. For example, we can see in reign of Charles I (1625 - 42), English Renaissance theater experienced its concluding efflorescence. The last works of Ben Jonson appeared on stage and in print, along with the final generation of major voices in the drama of the age: John Ford, Philiph Massinger, James Shirley, and Richard Brome. With the closure of the theatres at the start of the English Civil War in 1642, drama was suppressed for a generation, to resume only in the altered society of the English Restoration in 1660.

Actually I don't know what is literature exactly, but I ever read on dictionary before, literature in indonesian language means "kesusastraan".I also have asked to some people about what should we learn in literature subject. and they answered that in literature we will learn about literature branch of subject such as poetry, prose, drama, etc. So, after I know what we should learn in literature that makes me so interested for learning literature. Why? because, I like writing so it has relation with literature. I really want to make drama script and also poems. for me, that is the importance of literature.

The Elizabethan Era

The Elizabethan Era is the period associated with the reign of Queen Elizabeth I ( 1558-1603 ) and is often considered to be golden age in English Literature and poetry. This was saw of flowering English Literature and Poetry. This was also the time during which Elizabethan theatre grew and William Shakespeare, among others, composed plays that broke away from England's past style of plays.

The greates literature created during the Elizabethan period falls into two categories : Poetry and Drama. It was also influenced by the Italian Sonnets. English poets began to construct their own variations on the intricate, highly structured poetic form (during the reign of Hendry VIII).

Altough the shakespeare,who is commonly associated with Drama,out he. he suited his own purposes in an elaborate sequence of over 100 sonnets. Queen and her aristrocracy gave the very good respect , praise, and also patronage to the pursuit of literary life. So,it was viewed as an admirable and worthy endeavor.

The other great literary achievement of the Elizabethan period was drama, a form which was rooted in centuries of popular folk entertaiment and which had been adapted into yhe religious plays of the middle ages. In that Era, the theatre was a true common denaminator. Everyone, regardless of social class, enjoyed the spectacle of elizabethan theatre. One of the public Theatres in London such as "The globe" used to settle down for an afternoon performance to preede the fairs , street carnivals etc. One of the most playwright of the day as Shakespeare.

·Elyzabethan Poetry and Prose
The poet who introduced the Elizabethan age proper was Edmund Spenser . In 1579 he produced “The Stepherd's Calendor “.The poems are unequal. There are various subjects : praise of queen Elizabeth, discussion about religion, the Faerie Queene (1589-1596).

A kind of novel began in the Elizabethan age : Lyey's Euphues (1578 and 1580)started a fashion which spread in book and conversation. John Luly was employed at court . Euphis has a thin love story , which is used for the purpose of giving Luly's Ideas in various talk and letters. The style is filled with trick and alliteration; the sentences are long and complicated. This kind of style of style common in the conversation of ladies of the time. Queen Elizabeth herself used it. Even Shakespeare was influenced by this artificial style.

The Prose of Francis Bacon is important. Bacon an eminet lawyer and also judge. In “advancement of learning”(1609)the broadest statement of his grand schemen and a monument of his massive prose. His “essays” especially are popular still. The sentences in the earlier essays are short, sharp and effective.

·Elizabethan Drama
The chief literary glory of the great Elizabethan age was its drama. But, in general comedies are better than tragedies. One of the regular english comedy was Ralph Roister Doister (1553) by Nicholas Udall. One of the regular english tragedy was Gorboduc (1564) in blank verse. It was written by Thomas Norton and Thomas Sackuille.

The first great dramatist ef the time was Christopher Marlowe H.and S, tragedy,”Tamburline the Great”(1587 or earlier), is in two parts. It is written in the splendid blank verse that Marlowe brought to the stage.

The order in which the play of William Shakespeare were written in uncertain. It is known that he was an actor and dramatis by 1592. shakespeare's earliest work is probably seen in certain historical plays. Perhaps he began his work as a dramatist by improving the work of oyher writers.

Old english literature? Actually i dont know about this one, i've never learn about it. Its the first time that i've learn. So maybe i just give some conclusion about this 2nd assigment based on the text that i have read.Anglo-saxon is the other name of old english language. There are many poems in Old english. The greatest poem is Beowulf. it tells about the story in poetry of the adventures of a brave man. its describe about life in those old days.Generally, all of the poem things are described indirectly and incombination of words, there so many different structure and language (an ancient words) of course. So maybe we have to analize it very well.Actually, theres no one knows how to read it include me except by those who have made a special study of it.For me, as a reader its too difficult to understand.Hopefully i can learn this subject nicely because im still confuse untill now..

well, talking about old english literature it means that we talk about English language in the past. At that time the English language was not like English language that we could found today. They were very different! The old english language or can also called Anglo-saxon has different pronounciation, different vocabulary, different structure, even different grammar with the English language today. And i think the old english language is more difficult than the English language today. Because the old English language can not be read now except by the people who have a special study of it.one of the old english poem that used the old english language was BEOWULF which the author name is unknown. it tells us about fierce fight and brave deeds, of the speeches of the leader. not only BEOWULF, there are still many poems that used the old english language such as exodus, christ and satan , etc.and also not only poems that used the old english but also the prose. as far as I know, some people thats used the old english language on their writing such as Plato, Aristoteles ,etc.

The old english literature is happen from about A.d 600 to about 1100. It`s called Anglo-Saxon. One of the old english poem is Boewulf. It`s written at the seventh century and the writer unknown. The story of about 3,000 lines. It`s not talking about England but about a king of the Danes. His name`s Hrothgar and about a brave young man " Beawulf" from southern sweden. The poem is talking about the adventures of a brave young man " Beawulf" fight with a teribble creature. But in the end " Bouwulf" had to die.The old English literature it`s so difficult. Moreover, the people of England don`t understand how to read it. Except by the people who take a special study of it. Many old English poem adapted from the story of the Bible and put into poor old english verse. The written by Exodus.The oldest old english prose written at the beginning of the seventh century . Some of these are interesting. tThe most intersting piece of prose and be the best in old english is the Anglo-Saxon chronicle an early history of the country. it is written by Alfred King ( 849-901) and he translated into old english so that the people can read it. As long as I Know about old English literature I think It is also called Anglo-Saxon.Anglo-Saxon literature, the literary writings in Old English , composed between c.650 and c.1100.One of the poem at that time is Beowulf, a complete epic, is the oldest surviving Germanic epic as well as the longest and most important poem in Old English. It originated as a pagan saga transmitted orally from one generation to the next; court poets known as scops were the bearers of tribal history and tradition. Old English Old English or The Anglo-Saxons came from Germany. Presumably it was using that term as the Romans had used it, to refer to a vast and ill-defined territory east of the Rhine and north of the Danube, extending as far east as the vistula in present-day Poland and as far north as present-day Sweden and Norway. This teritory was nothing like a nations, but rather was inhabited by numerous tribes which were closely related culturally and linguistically. Literature is literally "acquaintance with letters" as in the first sense given in the Oxford English Dictionary (from the Latin littera meaning "an individual written character (letter)"). The term has generally come to identify a collection of texts or work of art, which in Western culture are mainly prose, both fiction and non-fiction, drama and poetry. In much, if not all of the world, texts can be oral as well, and include such genres as epic, legend, myth, ballad, other forms of oral poetry, and the folktale.

Based on the explanation above we can take some decision that literature is very important because we can learn more about literature as work of art, we can analize the content of kinds of literature such mentioned above. Thus, student can apply in learning process

The Importance of Literature for Students

In Sage's English Dictionary give definition that literature is creative writing of recognized artistic value or published writings in a particular style on a particular subject. Creative writing with artistic value is a kind of manifested of people to express their feeling.Generally, all of nations in the world have literatures, as can corporations, philosophical schools or historical periods. More specifically, literature refers with a collection of stories, poems, plays, poetry, prose, drama, novel, autobiography, mythos, legend, fable and any others that we can say as literature or works of art.

Based on that brief explanation I have decision that literature is very important to study because it provide some advantages for us. Mainly, we can express our feeling heart at the certain time according to our condition through literature. It means that as a solving problem media with artistic style. Furthermore, by literature study we can learn more how to measure or giving appreciate to some kinds of literature as a part of art of life. We can analyze, compare, critic, summary and take a conclusion of important message. Another point, we know about the process of literature how can it developed until today, started from classical age, middle age and modern age.

Consequently, it can motivate student to study well. Why? During learning period they can manipulate their feeling heart when boring, sadness, happiness and other feeling through in right way. It means that the role of literature as art media give great reinforcement for student if they know its importance.

Literature is compulsory course and a prequisite for prose, drama and poetry. Without literature we cant learn prose, drama and poetry. It can make us be easy to learn, because it is a first basic to learn before prose, drama and poetry.

By literature I can express my opinion, emotion, idea, feeling, imagination. I can express imagination to be an interesting story. By learn literature we can improve our understanding in language itself as the application of writing course with artistic style. We can analyze some story of each literary style like novel,plays, poetry. so that, we know how to determine plot, setting, theme character, point a view, etc.Thus, we can know what is the purpose and meaning of the story. If we want to be a good writer, literatur is very important.

In my opinion, literature is a unique thing to learn. By literatur I can express my feeling heart about everything such as those condition in sadness, happiness, relax, etc. Why does students must study first in intro to literature?. However, this is a requirement to move other subject in the next semester relationship with literature. Such Poetry, drama, prose, etc. Beside a literature as a expressing media, student can also have a look the development process of literature itself from local or domestic. As I know there are some kinds of literature such as : poetry, drama, fable, prose, etc.

Actually, my knowledge about literature is still narrow but I try to make a conclusion about it. As far as I know, literature is the basic things to know all about the literary work. I like literature because I can increase my skill in this field of subject such as how to make a good poem, how to know about drama, how to aplicate it in my daily life, and also how to talk to each other about what the literature is.

Actually I don't know what is literature exactly, but I ever read on dictionary before, literature in indonesian language means "kesusastraan".I also have asked to some people about what should we learn in literature subject. and they answered that in literature we will learn about literature branch of subject such as poetry, prose, drama, etc. So, after I know what we should learn in literature that makes me so interested for learning literature. Why? because, I like writing so it has relation with literature. I really want to make drama script and also poems. for me, that is the importance of literature.

How Important Literature in Your life?

Its so important for me. Because I am a person who can not spent my day with out reading. esspesially, reading novels. From its I could learn about other country's culture (I like to read some novels that written by foreign writters), and then I compare it with my life. some novels that I usualy read are teenlit, Chicklit, etc. Because it's story is describe our daily life. It's to close with me. I think Novels are the part of my life. From read it my immagination could fly, free, and I found that The world is mine. No body could bother me in that my world fantasy. And sometimes I need that sensation to relax my soul. When I feel sad and I think no body could understand me, reading some novels could make me forget my sadness. I also always write diary, poetry, short stories, to express my feeling that I can't share with other people even my mom and my bestfriends. for me literature is my bestfriend. A part of my life.

According to Oxxford Dictionary, Literature is writtings valued as works of art.
So, it’s mean that literature is one of media for people to express their feeling. As we know that literature include some kinds of arts such as poetry, prose, drama, novel, autobiography, mythos, legend, fable and any others that we can say as literature or works of art.

For example : Some people say that by writing a poetry she or he can express her or his feeling. Not only if she or he feel happy but also if sad too. So, from their poetry we can know their own feeling, sad or happy.

And the other say that by writing a novel they can explore their talent in writing, and make a story. Not only the novel story about love or daily life, but also the imaginative novel such as Harry Potter by JK Rowling that make all people who read the novel excite especially for teenager by read that novel we as reader can also imagine the strory, what happen there? And imagine the character of the story.

And than another example is read the autobiography, by read the autobiography of famous people we can know their story life and by read it can make us inspirated.

So, I think Literature is very important in my life, because by the example that I was mention above. By read the poetry I can know the people feeling, by read the novel I’m not only just read it but also I can imagine the story. And than the other kinds of literature is autobiography, it can make me inspirate with the story of famous people’s biography that I read and I hope I will be like them.

Literature is works of arts. So that, in literature there will be met many farious artistic language or words.
Beautiful sentences is the dominant factor in literature. By the language used in literature, something that look like not interesting will become interesting, something that not we familiar with become familiar, or something that not meaningful will become meaningfull.
